2012-03-20vfs: check i_nlink limits in vfs_{mkdir,rename_dir,link}Al Viro3-24/+13
New field of struct super_block - ->s_max_links. Maximal allowed value of ->i_nlink or 0; in the latter case all checks still need to be done in ->link/->mkdir/->rename instances. Note that this limit applies both to directoris and to non-directories. Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>

2012-01-03switch ->create() to umode_tAl Viro1-1/+1
vfs_create() ignores everything outside of 16bit subset of its mode argument; switching it to umode_t is obviously equivalent and it's the only caller of the method Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
2012-01-03switch vfs_mkdir() and ->mkdir() to umode_tAl Viro1-1/+1
vfs_mkdir() gets int, but immediately drops everything that might not fit into umode_t and that's the only caller of ->mkdir()... Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
2012-01-03vfs: fix the stupidity with i_dentry in inode destructorsAl Viro1-1/+0
Seeing that just about every destructor got that INIT_LIST_HEAD() copied into it, there is no point whatsoever keeping this INIT_LIST_HEAD in inode_init_once(); the cost of taking it into inode_init_always() will be negligible for pipes and sockets and negative for everything else. Not to mention the removal of boilerplate code from ->destroy_inode() instances... Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>

2011-01-07fs: dcache reduce branches in lookup pathNick Piggin2-2/+2
Reduce some branches and memory accesses in dcache lookup by adding dentry flags to indicate common d_ops are set, rather than having to check them. This saves a pointer memory access (dentry->d_op) in common path lookup situations, and saves another pointer load and branch in cases where we have d_op but not the particular operation. Patched with: git grep -E '[.>]([[:space:]])*d_op([[:space:]])*=' | xargs sed -e 's/\([^\t ]*\)->d_op = \(.*\);/d_set_d_op(\1, \2);/' -e 's/\([^\t ]*\)\.d_op = \(.*\);/d_set_d_op(\&\1, \2);/' -i Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
2011-01-07fs: icache RCU free inodesNick Piggin1-1/+8
RCU free the struct inode. This will allow: - Subsequent store-free path walking patch. The inode must be consulted for permissions when walking, so an RCU inode reference is a must. - sb_inode_list_lock to be moved inside i_lock because sb list walkers who want to take i_lock no longer need to take sb_inode_list_lock to walk the list in the first place. This will simplify and optimize locking. - Could remove some nested trylock loops in dcache code - Could potentially simplify things a bit in VM land. Do not need to take the page lock to follow page->mapping. The downsides of this is the performance cost of using RCU. In a simple creat/unlink microbenchmark, performance drops by about 10% due to inability to reuse cache-hot slab objects. As iterations increase and RCU freeing starts kicking over, this increases to about 20%. In cases where inode lifetimes are longer (ie. many inodes may be allocated during the average life span of a single inode), a lot of this cache reuse is not applicable, so the regression caused by this patch is smaller. The cache-hot regression could largely be avoided by using SLAB_DESTROY_BY_RCU, however this adds some complexity to list walking and store-free path walking, so I prefer to implement this at a later date, if it is shown to be a win in real situations. I haven't found a regression in any non-micro benchmark so I doubt it will be a problem. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
2011-01-07fs: change d_hash for rcu-walkNick Piggin1-1/+2

2010-08-09sysv: do not mark superblock dirty on remountArtem Bityutskiy1-2/+2
No need to mark the superblock as dirty in sysv_remount, synchronize it instead (only if mounting R/O). I did not find any docs about this file-system, and I have no possibility to test my changes. Thus, this is untested. I see other issues in sysv, e.g., why sysv_sync_fs writes only in the FSTYPE_SYSV4 case? However, it marks its SB bh's dirty for all types, and does not wait for them ever. With zero docs I'm unable to fix this. Signed-off-by: Artem Bityutskiy <Artem.Bityutskiy@nokia.com> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>

2010-08-09remove inode_setattrChristoph Hellwig1-1/+11
Replace inode_setattr with opencoded variants of it in all callers. This moves the remaining call to vmtruncate into the filesystem methods where it can be replaced with the proper truncate sequence. In a few cases it was obvious that we would never end up calling vmtruncate so it was left out in the opencoded variant: spufs: explicitly checks for ATTR_SIZE earlier btrfs,hugetlbfs,logfs,dlmfs: explicitly clears ATTR_SIZE earlier ufs: contains an opencoded simple_seattr + truncate that sets the filesize just above In addition to that ncpfs called inode_setattr with handcrafted iattrs, which allowed to trim down the opencoded variant. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
2010-08-09add missing setattr methodsChristoph Hellwig1-0/+12
For the new truncate sequence every filesystem that wants to truncate on-disk state needs a seattr method. Convert the remaining filesystems that implement the truncate inode operation to have its own setattr method. 2010-08-09get rid of block_write_begin_newtruncChristoph Hellwig1-3/+10
Move the call to vmtruncate to get rid of accessive blocks to the callers in preparation of the new truncate sequence and rename the non-truncating version to block_write_begin. While we're at it also remove several unused arguments to block_write_begin. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
2010-08-09introduce __block_write_beginChristoph Hellwig1-2/+1
Split up the block_write_begin implementation - __block_write_begin is a new trivial wrapper for block_prepare_write that always takes an already allocated page and can be either called from block_write_begin or filesystem code that already has a page allocated. Remove the handling of already allocated pages from block_write_begin after switching all callers that do it to __block_write_begin. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
2010-08-09clean up write_begin usage for directories in pagecacheChristoph Hellwig3-23/+13
For filesystem that implement directories in pagecache we call block_write_begin with an already allocated page for this code, while the normal regular file write path uses the default block_write_begin behaviour. Get rid of the __foofs_write_begin helper and opencode the normal write_begin call in foofs_write_begin, while adding a new foofs_prepare_chunk helper for the directory code. The added benefit is that foofs_prepare_chunk has a much saner calling convention. Note that the interruptible flag passed into block_write_begin is always ignored if we already pass in a page (see next patch for details), and we never were doing truncations of exessive blocks for this case either so we can switch directly to block_write_begin_newtrunc. 2010-06-29sysvfs: fix NULL deref. when allocating new inodeLubomir Rintel1-1/+5
A call to sysv_write_inode() in sysv_new_inode() to its new interface that replaced wait flag with writeback structure. This was broken by a9185b41a4f84971b930c519f0c63bd450c4810d ("pass writeback_control to ->write_inode"). 2010-05-27rename the generic fsync implementationsChristoph Hellwig2-2/+2
We don't name our generic fsync implementations very well currently. The no-op implementation for in-memory filesystems currently is called simple_sync_file which doesn't make too much sense to start with, the the generic one for simple filesystems is called simple_fsync which can lead to some confusion. This patch renames the generic file fsync method to generic_file_fsync to match the other generic_file_* routines it is supposed to be used with, and the no-op implementation to noop_fsync to make it obvious what to expect. In addition add some documentation for both methods. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>

2010-03-05pass writeback_control to ->write_inodeChristoph Hellwig2-3/+9
This gives the filesystem more information about the writeback that is happening. 2009-06-11->write_super lock_super pushdownChristoph Hellwig1-0/+2
Push down lock_super into ->write_super instances and remove it from the caller. Following filesystem don't need ->s_lock in ->write_super and are skipped: * bfs, nilfs2 - no other uses of s_lock and have internal locks in ->write_super * ext2 - uses BKL in ext2_write_super and has internal calls without s_lock * reiserfs - no other uses of s_lock as has reiserfs_write_lock (BKL) in ->write_super * xfs - no other uses of s_lock and uses internal lock (buffer lock on superblock buffer) to serialize ->write_super. Also xfs_fs_write_super is superflous and will go away in the next merge window Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
2009-06-11Push lock_super() into the ->remount_fs() of filesystems that care about itAl Viro1-0/+2
Note that since we can't run into contention between remount_fs and write_super (due to exclusion on s_umount), we have to care only about filesystems that touch lock_super() on their own. Out of those ext3, ext4, hpfs, sysv and ufs do need it; fat doesn't since its ->remount_fs() only accesses assign-once data (basically, it's "we have no atime on directories and only have atime on files for vfat; force nodiratime and possibly noatime into *flags"). [folded a build fix from hch] Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
2009-06-11push BKL down into ->put_superChristoph Hellwig1-0/+4
Move BKL into ->put_super from the only caller. A couple of filesystems had trivial enough ->put_super (only kfree and NULLing of s_fs_info + stuff in there) to not get any locking: coda, cramfs, efs, hugetlbfs, omfs, qnx4, shmem, all others got the full treatment. Most of them probably don't need it, but I'd rather sort that out individually. Preferably after all the other BKL pushdowns in that area. [AV: original used to move lock_super() down as well; these changes are removed since we don't do lock_super() at all in generic_shutdown_super() now] [AV: fuse, btrfs and xfs are known to need no damn BKL, exempt] Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
2009-06-11remove ->write_super call in generic_shutdown_superChristoph Hellwig1-0/+3
We just did a full fs writeout using sync_filesystem before, and if that's not enough for the filesystem it can perform it's own writeout in ->put_super, which many filesystems already do. Move a call to foofs_write_super into every foofs_put_super for now to guarantee identical behaviour until it's cleaned up by the individual filesystem maintainers. Exceptions: - affs already has identical copy & pasted code at the beginning of affs_put_super so no need to do it twice. - xfs does the right thing without it and I have changes pending for the xfs tree touching this are so I don't really need conflicts here.. 2008-11-14CRED: Wrap task credential accesses in the SYSV filesystemDavid Howells1-2/+2
Wrap access to task credentials so that they can be separated more easily from the task_struct during the introduction of COW creds. Change most current->(|e|s|fs)[ug]id to current_(|e|s|fs)[ug]id().
