2013-06-20ath9k: Use minstrel rate control by defaultSujith Manoharan4-9/+9

The ath9k rate control algorithm has various architectural issues that make it a poor fit in scenarios like congested environments etc. An example: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=927191 Change the default to minstrel which is more robust in such cases. The ath9k RC code is left in the driver for now, maybe it can be removed altogether later on. commit 531671cb17af07281e6f28c1425f754346e65c41 upstream. Almost all the DMA issues which have plagued ath9k (in station mode) for years are related to PS. Disabling PS usually "fixes" the user's connection stablility. Reports of DMA problems are still trickling in and are sitting in the kernel bugzilla. Until the PS code in ath9k is given a thorough review, disbale it by default. The slight increase in chip power consumption is a small price to pay for improved link stability. The module parameter "fwpostfix" is userspace controllable, unfiltered, and is used to define the firmware filename. b43_do_request_fw() populates ctx->errors[] on error, containing the firmware filename. b43err() parses its arguments as a format string. 2013-05-19B43: Handle DMA RX descriptor underrunThommy Jakobsson3-26/+40
commit 73b82bf0bfbf58e6ff328d3726934370585f6e78 upstream. Add handling of rx descriptor underflow. This fixes a fault that could happen on slow machines, where data is received faster than the CPU can handle. In such a case the device will use up all rx descriptors and refuse to send any more data before confirming that it is ok. This patch enables necessary interrupt to discover such a situation and will handle them by dropping everything in the ring buffer. 2013-05-19mwifiex: fix setting of multicast filterDaniel Drake1-15/+6

A small bug in this code was causing the ALLMULTI filter to be set when in fact we were just wanting to program a selective multicast list to the hardware. Fix that bug and remove a redundant if condition in the code that follows. This fixes wakeup behaviour when multicast WOL is enabled. Previously, all multicast packets would wake up the system. The error is hit within an hour or two. This issue happens when an interrupt comes in early while host sleep is still activated. Driver handles this case by auto cancelling host sleep. However is_suspended flag is still set which prevents any cmd or data from being sent to firmware. Fix it by clearing is_suspended flag in this path. If the key index is not checked for errors, it can lead to logspam that looks like this: "ath: wiphy0: keyreset: keycache entry 228 out of range" This can cause follow-up errors if the invalid keycache index gets used for tx. 2013-04-05b43: N-PHY: use more bits for offset in RSSI calibrationRafał Miłecki1-2/+2
commit 2e1253d640eb7f8707d2591c93097c1e9f9c71d5 upstream. When calculating "offset" for final RSSI calibration we're using numbers bigger than s8 can hold. We have for example: offset[j] = 232 - poll_results[j]; formula. If poll_results[j] is small enough (it usually is) we treat number's bit as a sign bit. For example 232 - 1 becomes: 0xE8 - 0x1 = 0xE7, which is not 231 but -25. This code was introduced in e0c9a0219a8f542e3946fe972a68aacf8c3f906c and caused stability regression on some cards, for ex. 2013-04-05b43: A fix for DMA transmission sequence errorsIestyn C. Elfick1-12/+53
commit b251412db99ccd4495ce372fec7daee27bf06923 upstream. Intermittently, b43 will report "Out of order TX status report on DMA ring". When this happens, the driver must be reset before communication can resume. The cause of the problem is believed to be an error in the closed-source firmware; however, all versions of the firmware are affected. This change uses the observation that the expected status is always 2 less than the observed value, and supplies a fake status report to skip one header/data pair. Not all devices suffer from this problem, but it can occur several times per second under heavy load. As each occurence kills the unmodified driver, this patch makes if possible for the affected devices to function. The patch logs only the first instance of the reset operation to prevent spamming the logs. 2013-04-05b43: N-PHY: increase initial value of "mind" in RSSI calibrationRafał Miłecki1-2/+2

For each VCM we calculte "currd" which is compared to the "mind". For PHY rev3+ "currd" gets values around 14k-40k. Looking for a value smaller than 40 makes no sense, so increase the initial value. 2013-04-05ath9k_hw: revert chainmask to user configuration after calibrationFelix Fietkau1-0/+4

The commit 'ath9k_hw: fix calibration issues on chainmask that don't include chain 0' changed the hardware chainmask to the chip chainmask for the duration of the calibration, but the revert to user configuration in the reset path runs too early. That causes some issues with limiting the number of antennas (including spurious failure in hardware-generated packets). Fix this by reverting the chainmask after the essential parts of the calibration that need the workaround, and before NF calibration is run. 2013-03-14ath9k_hw: improve reset reliability after errorsFelix Fietkau1-1/+3
commit 3412f2f086ea7531378fabe756bd4a1109994ae6 upstream. On many different chips, important aspects of the MAC state are not fully cleared by a warm reset. This can show up as tx/rx hangs, those annoying "DMA failed to stop in 10 ms..." messages or other quirks. On AR933x, the chip can occasionally get stuck in a way that only a driver unload/reload or a reboot would bring it back to life. With this patch, a full reset is issued when bringing the chip out of FULL-SLEEP state (after idle), or if either Rx or Tx was not shut down properly. The indication of an unset RSSI value, ATH_RSSI_DUMMY_MARKER, was supposed to have been set to 127, but ended up being set to 0x127 because of a code cleanup mistake. separately commit bc6b89237acb3dee6af6e64e51a18255fef89cc2 upstream. rtlwifi allocates both setup_packet and data buffer of control message urb, using shared kmalloc in _usbctrl_vendorreq_async_write. Structure used for allocating is: struct { u8 data[254]; struct usb_ctrlrequest dr; }; Because 'struct usb_ctrlrequest' is __packed, setup packet is unaligned and DMA mapping of both 'data' and 'dr' confuses ARM/sunxi, leading to memory corruptions and freezes. Bastian Bittorf reported that some of the silent freezes on a Linksys WRT54G were due to overflow of the RX DMA ring buffer, which was created with 64 slots. That finding reminded me that I was seeing similar crashed on a netbook, which also has a relatively slow processor. After increasing the number of slots to 128, runs on the netbook that previously failed now worked; however, I found that 109 slots had been used in one test. Kernel commits 41affd5 and 6539306 changed the locking in rtl_lps_leave() from a spinlock to a mutex by doing the calls indirectly from a work queue to reduce the time that interrupts were disabled. This change was fine for most systems; however a scheduling while atomic bug was reported in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=903881. The backtrace indicates that routine rtl_is_special(), which calls rtl_lps_leave() in three places was entered in atomic context. These direct calls are replaced by putting a request on the appropriate work queue. 2013-01-17b43: Fix firmware loading when driver is built into the kernelLarry Finger3-16/+48
commit 5e20a4b53094651d80f856ff55a916b999dbb57a upstream. Recent versions of udev cause synchronous firmware loading from the probe routine to fail because the request to user space would time out. The original fix for b43 (commit 6b6fa58) moved the firmware load from the probe routine to a work queue, but it still used synchronous firmware loading. This method is OK when b43 is built as a module; however, it fails when the driver is compiled into the kernel. This version changes the code to load the initial firmware file using request_firmware_nowait(). A completion event is used to hold the work queue until that file is available. This driver reads several firmware files - the remainder can be read synchronously. On some test systems, the async read fails; however, a following synch read works, thus the async failure falls through to the sync try. Driver should check the return value and handle this case properly. In mwifiex_wait_queue_complete() routine, as we are now checking wait_event_interruptible return value, the condition check is not required. Also, we have removed mwifiex_cancel_pending_ioctl() call to avoid a chance of sending second command to FW by other path as soon as we clear current command node. While AR_PHY_CCA_NOM_VAL_* does contain the expected internal noise floor for a chip measured in clean air, it refers to the lowest expected reading. Depending on the frequency, this measurement can vary by about 6db, thus causing a higher reported channel noise and signal strength. Factor in the 6db offset when converting internal noisefloor to channel noise. This patch makes the reported values more accurate for all chips without affecting NF calibration behavior.
