2008-07-17mmtimer: Push BKL down into the ioctl handlerAlan Cox1-14/+15
Switches to unlocked_ioctl read to remove ioctl BKL method. Fix the unknown ioctl return. Probably a nice easy one to kill off BKL usage entirely later Signed-off-by: Alan Cox <alan@redhat.com> Acked-by: Jes Sorensen <jes@sgi.com> Signed-off-by: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com>
2008-05-01remove div_long_long_remRoman Zippel1-13/+11
x86 is the only arch right now, which provides an optimized for div_long_long_rem and it has the downside that one has to be very careful that the divide doesn't overflow. The API is a little akward, as the arguments for the unsigned divide are signed. The signed version also doesn't handle a negative divisor and produces worse code on 64bit archs. There is little incentive to keep this API alive, so this converts the few users to the new API. 2008-04-30SGI Altix mmtimer: allow larger number of timers per nodeDimitri Sivanich1-156/+244
The purpose of this patch to the SGI Altix specific mmtimer (posix timer) driver is to allow a virtually infinite number of timers to be set per node. Timers will now be kept on a sorted per-node list and a single node-based hardware comparator is used to trigger the next timer. 2007-07-29Remove fs.h from mm.hAlexey Dobriyan1-0/+1
Remove fs.h from mm.h. For this, 1) Uninline vma_wants_writenotify(). It's pretty huge anyway. 2) Add back fs.h or less bloated headers (err.h) to files that need it. As result, on x86_64 allyesconfig, fs.h dependencies cut down from 3929 files rebuilt down to 3444 (-12.3%). 2006-12-07[PATCH] Correct misc_register return code handling in several driversNeil Horman1-5/+18
Clean up several code points in which the return code from misc_register is not handled properly. Several modules failed to deregister various hooks when misc_register fails, and this patch cleans them up. Also there are a few modules that legitimately don't care about the failure status of misc register. These drivers however unilaterally call misc_deregister on module unload. Since misc_register doesn't initialize the list_head in the init_routine if it fails, the deregister operation is at risk for oopsing when list_del is called. The initial solution was to manually init the list in the miscdev structure in each of those modules, but the consensus in this thread was to consolodate and do that universally inside misc_register. 2006-10-05IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlersDavid Howells1-2/+1
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the Linux kernel. The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path (ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()). Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception handling. Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing. I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers. I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile with minimal configurations. This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy. Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one: struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs); And put the old one back at the end: set_irq_regs(old_regs); Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ(). In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary: - update_process_times(user_mode(regs)); - profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs); + update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs())); + profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING); I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself, except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode(). Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers: (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in the input_dev struct. (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs pointer or not. (*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type irq_handler_t. 2006-07-03[PATCH] make more file_operation structs staticArjan van de Ven1-1/+1
Mark the static struct file_operations in drivers/char as const. Making them const prevents accidental bugs, and moves them to the .rodata section so that they no longer do any false sharing; in addition with the proper debug option they are then protected against corruption.. 2006-06-25[PATCH] mm: remove VM_LOCKED before remap_pfn_range and drop VM_SHMChristoph Lameter1-1/+0
Remove VM_LOCKED before remap_pfn range from device drivers and get rid of VM_SHM. remap_pfn_range() already sets VM_IO. There is no need to set VM_SHM since it does nothing. VM_LOCKED is of no use since the remap_pfn_range does not place pages on the LRU. The pages are therefore never subject to swap anyways. Remove all the vm_flags settings before calling remap_pfn_range. After removing all the vm_flag settings no use of VM_SHM is left. Drop it. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
