2010-10-17PM / Hibernate: Compress hibernation image with LZOBojan Smojver1-1/+2
Compress hibernation image with LZO in order to save on I/O and therefore time to hibernate/thaw. [rjw: Added hibernate=nocompress command line option instead of just nocompress which would be confusing, fixed a couple of compiler warnings, fixed kerneldoc comments, minor cleanups.] Signed-off-by: Bojan Smojver <bojan@rexursive.com> Signed-off-by: Rafael J. 2007-07-17Freezer: make kernel threads nonfreezable by defaultRafael J. Wysocki1-14/+4
Currently, the freezer treats all tasks as freezable, except for the kernel threads that explicitly set the PF_NOFREEZE flag for themselves. This approach is problematic, since it requires every kernel thread to either set PF_NOFREEZE explicitly, or call try_to_freeze(), even if it doesn't care for the freezing of tasks at all. It seems better to only require the kernel threads that want to or need to be frozen to use some freezer-related code and to remove any freezer-related code from the other (nonfreezable) kernel threads, which is done in this patch. The patch causes all kernel threads to be nonfreezable by default (ie. to have PF_NOFREEZE set by default) and introduces the set_freezable() function that should be called by the freezable kernel threads in order to unset PF_NOFREEZE. It also makes all of the currently freezable kernel threads call set_freezable(), so it shouldn't cause any (intentional) change of behaviour to appear. Additionally, it updates documentation to describe the freezing of tasks more accurately. [akpm@linux-foundation.org: build fixes] Signed-off-by: Rafael J. 2007-07-12USB: add USB-Persist facilityAlan Stern1-0/+3
This patch (as886) adds the controversial USB-persist facility, allowing USB devices to persist across a power loss during system suspend. The facility is controlled by a new Kconfig option (with appropriate warnings about the potential dangers); when the option is off the behavior will remain the same as it is now. But when the option is on, people will be able to use suspend-to-disk and keep their USB filesystems intact -- something particularly valuable for small machines where the root filesystem is on a USB device! 2007-04-30power management: remove firmware disk modeJohannes Berg1-9/+5
This patch removes the firmware disk suspend mode which is the wrong approach, it is supposed to be used for implementing firmware-based disk suspend but cannot actually be used for that. 2006-06-21[PATCH] USB: correct the USB info in Documentation/power/swsusp.txtDavid Brownell1-14/+23
The swsusp.txt documentation harshes confusingly on USB, and this patch addresses the issue. It's harsh because it blames USB for some issues that are generic to all drivers -- especially those supporting removable media -- and it's confusing since it says that USB has the issue with "suspend" not just swsusp ... while in reality, USB doesn't have the issue when real system suspend states are used. 2006-03-23[PATCH] swsusp: documentation updatesPavel Machek1-7/+44
Update suspend-to-RAM documentation with new machines, and makes message when processes can't be stopped little clearer. (In one case, waiting longer actually did help). From: "Rafael J. Wysocki" <rjw@sisk.pl> Warn in the documentation that data may be lost if there are some filesystems mounted from USB devices before suspend. 2006-01-06[PATCH] swsusp: make image size limit tunableRafael J. Wysocki1-0/+5
Make the suspend image size limit tunable via /sys/power/image_size. It is necessary for systems on which there is a limited amount of swap available for suspend. It can also be useful for optimizing performance of swsusp on systems with 1 GB of RAM or more. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. 2005-06-25[PATCH] Cleanup patch for process freezingChristoph Lameter1-2/+1
1. Establish a simple API for process freezing defined in linux/include/sched.h: frozen(process) Check for frozen process freezing(process) Check if a process is being frozen freeze(process) Tell a process to freeze (go to refrigerator) thaw_process(process) Restart process frozen_process(process) Process is frozen now 2. Remove all references to PF_FREEZE and PF_FROZEN from all kernel sources except sched.h 3. Fix numerous locations where try_to_freeze is manually done by a driver 4. Remove the argument that is no longer necessary from two function calls. 5. Some whitespace cleanup 6. Clear potential race in refrigerator (provides an open window of PF_FREEZE cleared before setting PF_FROZEN, recalc_sigpending does not check PF_FROZEN). This patch does not address the problem of freeze_processes() violating the rule that a task may only modify its own flags by setting PF_FREEZE. This is not clean in an SMP environment. freeze(process) is therefore not SMP safe! Signed-off-by: Christoph Lameter <christoph@lameter.com> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

2005-04-16Linux-2.6.12-rc2v2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds1-0/+235
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
